The University, with a view to encourage motivated young scholars to pursue Ph.D. programmes, awards 26 University Research Fellowships. In addition, there are candidates in the academic departments who receive fellowships from U.G.C., C.S.I.R. and other agencies for pursuing Ph.D. research programmes.
Eligibility for Admission to the Research Programmes :
Candidates possessing a Master's Degree in the concerned or related discipline of Manonmaniam Sundaranar University or any other qualification recognised by the Syndicated as equivalent thereto. Candidates should have passed 2 year PG Course after 3 year Bachelor Degree course and Higher Secondary Course of 2 year duration after 10 year S.S.L.C. or 1 year Pre-Degree after 11 year S.S.L.C. Candidates who have passed the PG degree examination with less than 17 years of total duration of study are not eligible for admission to M.Phil. / Ph.D. programmes. Candidates with Open University qualification are not eligible for admission to Research programmes.

COURSE OF STUDY
Both the M.Phil and Ph.D. programmes have two parts viz. Part I and II as detailed below: Part I: The Part I of the Research programme shall comprise the following three theory papers: i. Research Methodology ii. General Paper iii. Special paper
The Part I examinations shall be conducted during July and February every year.
Candidates registered for Full-Time programme shall take the examinations, after six months of their registration to the respective research programme while those registered for the Part-Time Programme shall take the examinations after twelve months of registration.
Part II : Thesis / Dissertation
Each candidate shall be required to choose a research problem in his/her chosen area of research specialization and submit a thesis / dissertation incorporating the results of his/her investigation carried out under the supervision of a recognised supervisor.

A guide recognised for Ph.D. programmes can guide at any point of time not more than 8 Ph.D. candidates and a guide recognized for M.Phil. programmes can guide at any point of time not more than 4 M.Phil. candidates.
HOW TO APPLY:
The application forms, complete in all respects should be submitted in triplicane to The Registrar,Manonmaniam Sundaranar University,Tirunelveli. The following are the sessions for admission to the M.Phil. / Ph.D. programmes in University during each academic year.

The applications shall not be the college / University department where the candidate seeks admission. The applications should be accompanied by properly attested photostat copies of the following certificates: 1. Mark / Grade certificate of the qualifying post graduate (PG) course 2. Provisional / degree certificates of the Under Graduate (UG) and Post-Graduate courses (PG) 3. Transfer and conduct certificate (issued by the Institution last studied) 4. Community certificate 5. Service certificate issued by the Employer (in the case of candidates applying for part-time programme specifying the total duration of the service put in by the candidates in their organisation). 6. No objection certificate issued by the Head of the Institution / Employer (in the case of candidates applying for part-time programme) 7. Qualification approval letter issued by this University (in the case of teacher candidates, working in unaided colleges / unaided departments for departments in the aided colleges, applying for part-time programme).
NOTE: It should be noted that reverse side of the green color application submitted by candidates shall not be filled-in by the Guide/HOD / Principal at the time of submitting the application. The applications submitted by candidates for getting admission into a particular Institution / Colleges if the candidate wishes to apply for admission in more than one college/department he/she shall submit separate applications for each college / department. The applications submitted for admission to Ph.D. programme cannot be transfered to M.Phil course and vice-versa. Once the application submitted to the University for a particular session shall not be considered for subsequent sessions. Incase, the programme to which applied is not offered in the concerned institution, the application will be rejected.
Selection Procedure :
The candidates will be selected for admission to the research programme, based on their academic performance and performance in a personal interview conducted to assess the aptitude of the candidate for research and his / her academic competence and subject to satisfying the eligibility conditions. The candidates selected for admission to the M.Phil. / Ph.D. programmes in the University Departments shall be required to submit the original transfer certificate and conduct certificate, issued by the Institution last studied, statements of marks and Provisional / Degree Certificates of Post Graduate and or M.Phil. Degree Courses. The certificates once surrendered will not be returned to the candidates till the completion of the research programme. Hence, the candidates are advised to retain with them sufficient number of attested photocopies of the certificates, before surrendering the originals.
Scholarship / Fellowships:
A number of scholarships are available for BC, MBC, SC/ST candidates admitted to the M.Phil / Ph.D. full time programmes in the University Departments. A number of fellowships like University Research Fellowships, Fellowships offered by the University Grants Commission, Council for scientific and industrial research and Junior Research Fellowships and Senior Research Fellowships are available to the students admitted to the Ph.D. full-time programmes in the University Departments.
