The Department of English is one of the eleven departments that enabled the founding of the Manonmaniam Sundaranar University in 1990. It is a Department with the UGC sanctioned faculty strength of one Professor, two Readers and four Lecturers. In the past couple of decades and a little more,
the Department has come a long way in terms of infrastructure and academics. The Department which began in a small rented building has now a place of its own and very soon it would have a separate block.
Academically the Department is a vibrant one. The faculty members of the Department have brought laurels to the same by winning very prestigious international and national awards like Commonwealth Academic Fellowship, SAARC Fellowship, Shastri Indo Canadian Fellowship and Associateship in Indian Institute of Advanced Studies.
Two of the faculty members Prof V. Sam Sahayam and Prof. S Ravindranathan were awarded Emeritus Professorship by the UGC. Prof. R.Balachandran was an acknowledged poet in Tamil. Prof. Thillainayagam had done extensive work in gender sensitization at the state level.
The current faculty members are engaged in research projects funded by national agencies like UGC and Central Institute for Indian Languages. The faculty members have published/edited books and some of them were published by the University Publication Division.
Organizing annual national and international conferences is on the regular agenda of the Department. More than 70 Ph.Ds have been awarded degrees and currently about 25 are working for Ph.D. with the faculty. Almost all of our postgraduate students and M.Phil. students of the past years are well placed.
With such a past history, the Department strives to do research of high standards so as to uphold the tradition handed down. And with a bevy of young and enthusiastic faculty members, the Department is sure to reach the stars to which its wagons are hitched.
