Department of Social Exclusion and Inclusive Policy

         
  The Centre for the Study of Social Exclusion and Inclusive Policy has been started functioning from August 2008. This Centre has been founded under UGC grant-in-Aid for the period of XIth five year plan.
         
  Mandate      
Conceptualizing discrimination, Exclusion and inclusion based on caste/ Ethnicity and religion.
Developing an understanding of the nature and dynamics of discrimination and exclusion
Developing an understanding of discrimination at an empirical level.
Formulating polices for protecting the rights of these groups and eradication of the problem of exclusion and discrimination.
         
  Objectives of the Centre
To develop distinctive approach to Social Exclusion.
To create index and indicators on Social Exclusion.
To critically evaluate the existing public polices vis-à-vis Social Exclusion.
To develop alternative model for future public policy initiatives.

  Dr.P. Kannappan - Professor Cum Director
   
       Dr.P. Kannappan did his M.A. and M.Phil Programmes in the Sociology Department of Madurai Kamraj University. He received his Ph.D. degree from the Manonmaniam Sundaranar University, Tirunelveli. He has published a book and several research articles in referred journals of national and international importance. Besides, he has also organized and participated in many National and International Seminars which largely addressed the issues and problems of youth and marginalized communities. He has been a consultant to many non-governmental organizations dealing with the issues of women, child labours, child abuse and rural development etc. His areas of specialization in teaching, research and consultancy includes social problems, social demography, research methodology, empowerment of marginalized groups and population education.

     Dr. P. Kanappan has wide exposure and work experience in the areas of social welfare, microlevel planning, prevention and rehabilitation of child labour and physically challenged at National and International levels through research and consultancy. He has also served as Director of the Department of Youth Welfare in Manonmaniam Sundaranar University. He was previously worked as a Reader in the Department of Sociology, Manonmaniam Sundaranar University. He has served more than twenty years in various University Bodies like Syndicate and Convenience Committees. He has assumed the charge of Professor – Cum – Director in the Centre for the Study of Social Exclusion and Inclusive Policy in August 2008. Under his stewardship, the Centre started functioning with potential and vigor.
   
  Dr. D. Solomon Raj - Reader Cum Deputy Director
   
        Dr. D. Solomon Raj specializes in Energy Economics and received his Ph.D. degree from Manonmaniam Sundaranar University. Previously he was working as a Reader in the Economics Department of Pope’s College, Sawyerpuram. He authored one book and a co-author of another one. He has also edited a book of ISBN publication. To his credit, he has conducted a UGC Sponsored national level seminar and completed two minor research projects. He has been guiding 6 Ph.D. research scholars and one of his scholars has already submitted his thesis. He has also guided eight M.Phil research scholars.

      He received the University level best Programme Officer Award and best NSS Unit Award. And very recently, he has received the best State Level NSS Award from the Government of Tamil Nadu. He presented 2 research papers in International Conferences and 35 research papers in National/Regional Seminars. He has also published 10 research articles in Journals and Edited Books. He won prizes in two competitions and cleared 4 Special Exams in Tamil and English. He has attended 23 Special Courses / Workshops. He is associating with 4 professional bodies. Currently, he is working on the themes of social exclusion and inclusive policy.   
   
  Dr. S. Mookiah Reader Cum Deputy Director
   
        Dr.S.Mookiah has received Ph.D. in Economics during 1995 from Madurai Kamraj University. He has completed his Master and M.Phil degrees in Economics. He was working in the position of Reader in the Economics Department of Sri K.G.S. Arts College, Srivaikundam for the past 21 years and also served as the N.S.S. Co-ordinator in Manonmaniam Sundaranar University, Tirunelveli from 01/12/2005 to 30/11/2008. He has organized various awareness programmes for the students, N.S.S. programme officers and the village people. He has also organized a National Integration Programme in the University. He attended Various National Level Seminars, Conferences and Workshops. He has also attended various Orientation Programmes and Refresher Courses. He published six articles in the leading referred journals and also published one edited book. He has guided six M.Phil scholars and at present guiding one Ph.D. research scholar. He specialized in unorganized sectors, especially in dalit community.
   
  Dr. R. Pavananthi Vemblu Lecturer Cum Assistant Director
   
       He holds Ph.D. from Jawaharlal Nehru University and specializes in European Studies. Before joining the Centre, he worked in JNU and some New Delhi based Research Institutes as Research Associate / Coordinator. He was also a Reasearch Fellow at National Film Archieve of India, Pune. He has published a book and two articles in research journels. Currently he works on the theme of Social Movements in Tamil Nadu.
   
  S. Alamelumangai Lecturer Cum Assistant Director
   
       She was a UGC – Senior Research Fellow at the Centre for Adult and Continuing Education and Extension, Bharathithasan University, Thiruchirappalli. She has completed M.Phil degree. At present she is conducting her doctoral research programme in the area of Adult Education at Bharathidasan University. She has so for published seven research articles in edited books and presented ten papers in seminars/conferences. Currently she is extensively working on Social Exclusion and Gender Gap in Education.
   
  Dr.M. Buvaneswaran Lecturer Cum Assistant Director
   
       Dr.M.Buvaneswaran has been awarded Ph.D. in Sociology at Madurai Kamaraj University. He completed Master degree in Rural Development and Sociology and M.Phil. in Micro level planning. He worked as Research Assistant and Project Fellow in various research projects over a period of 13 years at Gandhigram and Madurai Kamaraj University. He specializes on Sociology of Politics and Excluded Communities.He has Published four articles in reputed journals. Currently, he is working on impact of globalization among excluded communities.
   
  Mr.L.T. Om Prakash Research Associate
   
        He has submitted his Ph.D. thesis in the subject area of Sociology. His areas of interests are Social Stratification, Social Exclusion and Labour Studies. To his credit, he has presented 7 research papers in various seminars / conferences and three of his research articles have been accepted for publication. He has also participated in two research methodology training programmes organized by various reputed institutions, which added to his research skills. Besides, he was previously worked as a Senior Research Fellow in the Department of Sociology of this University. At present he is extensively working in various themes of Social Exclusion.  
   
  Mr.K. Ragupathi - Research Associate
   
       He has submitted his Ph.D. thesis on Dalit Movements in 2007 in the History Department of Manonmaniam Sundaranar University. He has so far published a book and some research articles both in Tamil and English. He has completed two research projects on ‘Dalit Struggle for Water’ funded by Dr.Ambedkar Study Centre, Manonmaniam Sundaranar University, Tirunelveli and ‘Untouchablity among Untouchables’ funded by Vikas Adhyayan Kendra, Mumbai. Currently he is working on Dalit Movements and Caste Conflict in Tamil Nadu.
